Is Management a Science or an Art?

Management as a Science:

Science is a systematic body of knowledge acquired through rigorous method of collecting data, classifying and measuring it, setting up hypothesis and testing those. If the criteria for science is applied to management, it may be observed that:

It is a systematic body of knowledge that deals with people.

Its principles have been evolved over the years on the basis of continuous careful observations and experimentation.

Its principles have universal application in every branch of human activity of a profit making as well as a non-profit making organisation.

Its principles may not yield identical results or desired results when applied to different organizations at different times simply because human behaviour is ever changing and most unpredictable.

Therefore, management is not a exact science but some aspects of management are scientific.

Management as an Art:

The basic characteristics of Art are:

Art is an application of theoretical knowledge gained.

It involves deliberate and conscious effort on the part of the user to achieve goals.

It requires some special skills on the part of the user.

If the above criteria are applied to management, it may be noted that:

Management is the application of that human knowledge which deals with people.

It applies deliberate and conscious efforts to achieve its objectives

Management is creative. A manager like an artist needs to depend on his own experience, inner senses, intuition and judgement while taking decisions on any managerial problem.

Therefore, management is an art.

Ten Rules For Being Human By Cherie Carter-Scott

1.You will receive a body. You may like it or hate it, but it will be yours for a lifetime.
2. You will learn lessons. You are enrolled in a full-time, informal school called “life”. Each day in this school you will have the opportunity to learn lessons. You may like the lessons or think them irrelevant and stupid.
3. There are no mistakes, only lessons. Growth is a process of trial and error, experimentation. The “failed” experiments are as much a part of the process as the experiment that ultimately “works.”
4. A lesson is repeated until it is learned. A lesson will be presented to you in various forms until
you learn it. Then you can go on to the next lesson.
5. These lessons will never end. There is no part of life that does not contain its lessons. If you are alive, there are lessons to be learned.
6. “There” is no better than “here.” When your “there” has become a “here,” you will simply
obtain another “there” that looks better than “here.”
7. Others are mirrors of your own self-image. You will be drawn to others for the positive qualities you
believe exist within you. In a similar way you will tend to hate others who reflect back to you those qualities you most fear in yourself.
8. What you make of your life is up to you. You have all the tools and resources you need; what you do with them is up to you. The choice is yours.
9. The answers are found within you. You already have the answers to life’s questions. Just
look, listen within, and trust your intuitive powers.
10. You will forget all this.

Flash Point is defined as the temperature at which a liquid fuel begins to generate vapours just enough to form an explosive or a mixture that is inflammable. Larger a fuel is volatile, lesser will be the flash point. This property, important for gasolines whose flash point is lower than ambient temperature, is termed Volatility.

Pour Point is defined as the lowest temperature at which a liquid will just flow or pour from a vessel.

Ignition Temperature is the lowest temperature at which combustion occurs with the mixing of the fuel in vapour form with oxygen in the surrounding air.

Flame Temperature is defined as the temperature attained by products of combustion when all the heat generated by the fuel is allowed to heat it at the original volume of the fuel, and no heat is allowed to be lost to the surroundings.

Flame Speed is the speed at which the flame will travel in a mixture of gaseous fuel and air.

Stoichiometric Combustion of a fuel is defined as the process of complete combustion of its constituents to the products of combustion with evolution of heat. The pre-requisite of any such phenomenon is the availability of the fuel in a gaseous state (when it can mix with the oxygen in the surrounding air) and the prevailing temperatures to be high enough so that the combustion reaction can take place leading to the release of heat energy.

Excess Air Factor is defined as the fraction of air required in excess of the theoretical amount.
Excess Air Factor= (actual air requirement – theoretical air requirement) / theoretical air requirement

Combustion Efficiency measures the effectiveness of the combustion reaction and is defined as
Combustion Efficiency = heat released during combustion / heat contained in the fuel

Effective Calorific Value is the effective heating value obtainable from a sample fuel which is much less than the net heating value. This is due to the partial oxidation of C to CO and some hydrogen remaining unoxidised.

Dryness Fraction of a gaseous mixture is the ratio of the mass of the steam in the mixture to the mass of the entire mixture.
Dryness fraction = mass of steam in mixture / mass of the mixture

Boiler Efficiency is the percentage of heat given out by the boiler to the heat supplied to the boiler.
Boiler Efficiency = ( heat given out by the boiler / heat supplied to the boiler ) * 100 %
= ( evaporation ratio * heat content of steam) / ( fuel rate * calorific value)

Maximum Continuous Rating is the design rating of working for which the efficiency of the boiler is maximum.

Heat Utilization Efficiency (HUE) Factor or Fuel Utilization Efficiency (FUE) Factor
= target fuel consumption / actual fuel consumption
where target fuel consumption = standard steam consumption / standard steam to fuel ratio

Weighted Average Combustion Efficiency
= ( Sum of the combustion efficiencies * average steam load ) / Sum of the average steam load

Absolute Pressure is the common gauge pressure plus the atmospheric pressure.

Caustic Embrittlement refers to the cracking of boiler steel occuring while the boiler is in service but not subjected to excessive pressure or temperature due to the boiler’s water being too caustic.

In order to apply these tips you need to know your maximum upload and download speed. You can test your bandwidth over here (stop all download activity while testing). Also make sure that you applied the tips provided in our previous posts. Note that there’s a huge difference between kb/s (kilobits/second) and kB/s (kilobytes/second). To be precise, kB/s = kb/s divided by 8. In this tutorial we use kB/s (like most torrent clients do). This means that you might need to calculate your max speed in kB/s yourself if the speedtest only gives you the results in kb/s (so divide by 8 then). Settings 1-4 can be found in the options, settings or preference tab of most torrent clients.

1. Maximum upload speed

Probably the most important setting there is. Your connection is (sort of) like a pipeline, if you use you maximum upload speed there’s not enough space left for the files you are downloading. So you have to cap your upload speed. Use the following formula to determine your optimal upload speed…
80% of your maximum upload speed
So, if your maximum upload speed is 40 kB/s, the optimal upload rate is 32kB/s But keep seeding!

2. Maximum download speed

Although setting your maximum download speed to unlimited may sound interesting, in reality it will only hurt your connection. If you still want to be able to browse properly, set your maximum download speed to:
95% of your maximum download speed so if your maximum download speed is 400 kB/s, the optimal download speed is 380kB/s

3. Maximum connected peers per torrent

Yet another setting that you don’t want to max out. I experimented quite a lot with the max connected peers
settings and came to the conclusion that both high and low number hurt the download speed of a torrent. The following setting worked best for me.
upload speed * 1.3
so, if your maximum upload speed is 40 kB/s, the optimal amount of connected peers per torrent is
40 * 1.3 = 52
I didn’t noticed a difference for fast or slow connections here.

4. Maximum upload slots

1 + (upload speed / 6)
So, if your maximum upload speed is 30 kB/s, the optimal number of upload slots is
1 + (30 / 6) = 6

5. More tips

A. Seed.
Downloading speeds will be sub-optimal for everyone unless everyone plays their part and seeds. Private tracker sites are a great example of how the overall speed of the swarm increases when everyone is seeding and downloading in equal measure. So, play your part in seeding and tell others to as well.
B. Be connectable.
Make sure you’re not “firewalled” by opening up your incoming ports or by enabling UPnP in your router,
otherwise you’ll be leaving bandwidth on the table.
C. Select the right torrents.
Your download will be faster if you choose to download a torrent where there is a good balance of seeds and peers. For instance, Vuze ranks its search results according to the number of seeds and peers to make this easier.
D. Be realistic.
Check the swarm average and if you’re already above average, then you just need to be patient. If you’re below average, go back and check some of these other things I’ve mentioned.

For many other tips and tricks u can refer to this site.

These are some useful download sites which let you download all kinds of stuff including software, games, videos, music videos and images.

www.download7.net
www.warez-bb.org
www.warez-vortex.net
www.dl4all.com
www.share4all.com
www.tehparadox.com
www.myneedz.com/friendz/index.php
www.filecyb.org
www.9down.com/topiclist

You can also opt the process involving Torrents. Torrent sites provide a easy method of sharing of files between distant computer users. Torrent is a small file (around few kilobytes) with the extension .torrent, which contains all the information needed to download a file the torrent was made for. That means it contains file names, their sizes, where to download from and so on. You can get torrents for almost anything on lots of web sites and torrent search engines. It is a kind of P2P file sharing. In this process what you need to do is:

1. Download a torrent client software like the following and install it on your computer.

uTorrent

BitLord

BitTorrent

Bitcomet

2. Then you need to find torrent files from various torrent search engine sites like:

Mininova

Torrentscan

Torrentreactor

Torrentz

TrackTrap

And sites like the following specially for high speed movie downloads:

Mininova-aXXo

Mininova-FXG

and open the torrent files using the torrent client. The desired file or set of files start to download depending on the number of seeders present online.

A seeder is a person who has more than 0% of the files described by the torrent. If a torrent has no seeders, then no one has anything to give.

Keeping an eye on the number of peers or leachers present proves also helpful. A peer or leacher is a person who is looking for the files described by the torrent. The more peers the more people are actively looking for the files described by the torrent. As a result more speed is available while downloading.

A tracker is a computer on the Internet. The tracker’s role is to manage live torrent files and keep track of statistics. When you open a torrent file in your client software, your client software contacts the tracker specific to that torrent. You client tells the tracker how much of the actual files (described by the torrent) that you currently have.

The upload speed limit can be controlled with the help of the torrent client lowering which proves helpful for slow bandwidth computers. But increasing the upload speed limit increases the download speed for fast bandwidth computers; ideally the upload speed should be kept 80% of the available download speed to attain an ideal situation. The torrent client offers parallel downloads which helps to increase download speeds.

N.B. Legality of downloading with torrents
Considering ethical concerns, you should not download copyrighted materials such as software, mp3, movies and so on. If you do not have the licence for it, it is illegal. There is an additional problem with torrents – in certain countries “only downloading” movies and mp3s is legal, however when downloading with torrents you also share (upload) your downloaded part – and that is not legal anywhere.
